Split Pea Soup with Ham

A cold day, hard work out in the open air, and then a big bowl of this...and maybe another after that. It doesn't get better than this

  • 1/2 cup dried split peas
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 lb smoked ham shanks
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper to taste

Boil or pressure cook ham shanks until the meat falls off the bone, reserve liquid
Soak dried peas setting overnite in fresh water
Put all ingrediants into a stock pot and simmer until peas are soft.

Great with some good hearty bread and butter or on its own. This is one substantial soup!
