Cape Cod Recipes

Banana Bread

Banana Bread? What does that have to do with traditional Cape Cod cookery? Well, we're glad you asked.

You see, back in the days of sailing ships, one Capt. Lorenzo Dow Baker of Wellfleet bought 160 bunches of bananas in Jamaica, loaded them on his schooner and sailed to New York where he sold them for $2 a bunch. As it was in 1870, that was substantial money. He knew he was onto a good thing and what eventually became the United Fruit Company was born.

So, Cape Cod comes by bananas honestly. Chances are that somebody was wondering what to do with some of the browner bananas and put them to use in Banana Bread

  • 2 C Flour
  • 1 C Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/4 C softened Butter
  • 3/4 C Orange Juice
  • 1 C Smashed Bananas

Mix everything together and bake at 350 degrees until a toothpick comes out clean.

You'll notice there's none of the walnuts you see in most Banana Bread recipes. We don't particularly like 'em in bread, and think they are better all by themselves.

After a morning spent working the tide, a generous slice or two of Banana Bread, hot with plenty of butter hits the spot alongside a large mug of coffee. Or any time. Makes a good dessert if you just want to interest your sweet tooth without going overboard.
